What’s on in Moscow on Victory Day?

You might not be able to go on a tour of Kremlin or visit St Basil’s cathedral (the whole Red Square will be closed for visitors due to preparations for parade and concerts), but all the rest that will be happening in the capital on that day will leave you speechless.

This is the biggest patriotic celebration in Russia & you got really lucky if you’re here on the 9th of May.

Inhale the spirit of Victory together with thousands of citizens all over the city: all day long there will be songs, concerts, congratulatins to veterans & stories about those tough but glorious days heard on every corner. Here’s where you can go to experience the best of it:

Victory day military parade on Red square

The main event of the day traditionally will be impressive military parade on Red square. Entrance is upon invitation, but it will be broadcast on other venues and on TV: 10:00–10:45

The Immortal regiment march

For the seventh time this year the march will flood Moscow. This is a truly impressive procession, if you want to learn more about it check this BBC article.  Accompanied by war-time songs, the citizens will march on the central streets of the capital, carrying portraits of their relatives who contributed to the Great Patriotic war.

The ceremony starts from Belorussky railway station and ends at the Red square: 15:00-18:00

Park Pechatniki

The alleys and open estrades of the Park will host war themed plays and concerts featuring famous singers and actors: 10:00–22:00

Kuskovo Estate

The Big Conservatory will host a concert dedicated to the heroism of the Russian people during the great Patriotic war. There will be songs of the war time and postwar years sung at the performance. Beginning is at 15:30

Theatre Square

The square in front of Bolshoy theatre traditionally gathers veterans, their children and grandchildren on the 9th of May.

As usually there will be concerts featuring well-known Opera artists and young talented performers: 10:00–22:00

Museum-reserve Tsaritsyno

The square in front of the Grand Palace in Tsaritsyno will entertain visitors from morning to evening with the sound of orchestra. You will have a chance to listen to a folk choir, jazz band and songs of the war time: 10:00-20:00

Square of Rizhsky station

Here you may celebrate Victory day with a retro train, a brass band and a concert: 9:30–11:00

Yekaterininskiy Park

Here the celebration will be held for two days.  On the 8th of May there will be sport competitions and contests, while on the 9th of May they will host a concert and retro discotheque accompanied by war time songs:  8-9th of May, 10:00-22:00

Poklonnaya Gora and Victory Park

The visitors will be entertained by big concert, Victory Parade broadcast and equestrian performance: 8-9th of May, 10:00-22:00. Entrance to the Museum will be free of charge.

Vorontsovskiy Park (Vorontsovo Estate)

Sporting events, historical re-enactments and a concert will take place here throughout the day: 13:00–22:00

Museum and Park Severnoye Tushino

Enjoy war time songs, various workshops and fireworks later in the evening: 13:00–22:00

Moscow Zoo

Even zoological park prepared special agenda for such an important day.  There will be interactive excursions and workshops taking place: 13:00–15:00

Belorussky railway station

Railway stations were important during the war years, but Belorussky was particularly crucial for Sovien citizens’ spirit: the legendary song The Sacred War was sung for the first time here, wneh the first troop trains were departing to the front (check more details about this station here)

Victory Day celebrations in a place, that witnessed the historic events themselves, will be held all day: 10:00-22:00

War films, shown on Moscow Manege building facade

Moscow under Nazi siege, Leningrad under blockade, Stalingrad battle and other heroic cities will come to life on Manege walls. The video mapping shows will take place from the 1st to 11the of May: 21:00-23:00 Central exhibition hall Manege, Okhotny Ryad subway station

Hermitage Garden

Big concert starts at12:00, while in the evening there will be military orchestra playing and Victory ball taking place, starting from 18:00. Visitors will learn popular dances from the last century: the military waltz, Rio Rita, the Polish Krakowiak.

Tagansky Park

Here all visitors may take part in a historic quest, dedicated to the battle of Kursk of 1943, that became one of the main battles of the Great Patriotic War. Having come off with flying colours at Kursk, the Soviet army changed the course of the war and launched strategic offensive operations on other fronts. The quest will take place from 13:00 to 18:00.

Babushkinsky Park of culture and leisure

The Park will install Wall of Memory where people will be able to leave the names of their relatives died or mortally wounded in the war. Here one can also leave good wishes to the veterans.
